Welcome To K.H. James

Thank you for stopping by. I’m glad you found your way here.

I’m K.H. James, a YA fiction writer with a head full of rebellious fairy-tale characters, mythological mischief, and stories that refuse to follow an accepted narrative. I generally write for young adults, though if you’re older and still refuse to grow up entirely, or younger and wiser beyond your years, I hope you’ll feel right at home, too.

Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved books, and fairy/fantasy stories in particular. But I think my true literary influence began in my early teens, when I read my first book by the great, late Terry Pratchett. That’s not to say other authors hadn’t influenced me just as much, but The Colour of Magic quietly rewired how I think about storytelling. The idea that fiction can be funny and profound, ridiculous and deeply true, all at once, is something I love to carry into everything I write.

I live in Cornwall, which helps enormously. My husband and I grew up here, met here, married here, and after twenty-one years in South Wales, we came home. Cornwall is a county so soaked in myth and legend that inspiration arrives before breakfast and rarely leaves before dark. We share a cosy cottage near the River Tamar with three brilliant children, Mr Jinx (a cat of strong opinions and questionable manners), and Tess (a collie who approaches life at full throttle).

Beyond the cottage, our garden stretches to a hundred feet of pure magic, and right at the bottom, trains trundle by, passing along Brunel’s engineering masterpiece, the Albert Bridge. Every day in this place presents something new to see. It’s an absurdly good place to write.

On this site, you’ll find my stories, my working notes, glimpses behind the scenes of whatever I’m currently writing, and a cosy look at life in Kernow. From September, I hope to launch Books, Brews & Bakes, a cosy community for readers who take their fiction seriously and their snacks equally so.

K.H. James is the pen name of a writer based in Cornwall, England.
